Vancouver Cheap Eats - Dosa Factory

Everyone has talked about the Monday Dosa specials and I missed going with the large group of colleagues.  So I asked my Indian friend if she wanted to go again and bring me there.  Of course she said "Yes" as it's hard to resist a meal for $5.99.  That's the Monday special where you can order a dosa for $5.99.  At that price she basically told us to order one to go so we all would have lunch the next day.  Initially I wasn't going to but then I really thought about it and figured out that $5.99 is cheaper than a McDonald's Big Mac combo.  I might have offended my friend at that time for comparing authentic South Indian Food to McDonalds.  That justification won me over and I ordered one dosa to eat-in and one dosa to go.

Mondays at the Dosa Factory on Kingsway in Vancouver is a big deal so it's natural that you have to put your name down on the wait list and wait.  With a smaller group of 4 people it was easier than with a group of 10 people.  I did notice that they had many tables of 2 so a dynamic duo is a good number.

It was worth the wait.  When we were seated there were bottles of water on the table for us.  The Monday menu was simple and we ordered one dosa to eat in and one order to go.  They were able to keep track of our order.  Even though it was busy and cheap, they still take the time to provide good customer service which I appreciate.

I ordered a prawn dosa to eat in and the lamb dosa to go.  A dosa is pictured below and it's hard to see but inside it has the delicous filling of vegetables, potato, and the "prawn" or "lamb" or "menu option" of your choice.  What was more surprising is that it was filling and I was stuffed after eating one dosa.  I would definitely return to the Dosa Factory.  Everyday they have specials but Mondays are the cheapest.  I'll return again for another Dosa Day.

Vancouver Restaurant - Rogue Ktichen and Wetbar Convention Center

Vancity Girlfriend's girl's night out can be impromptu and unplanned.  It was a surprisingly sunny afternoon so I ventured out to see Vancity Girlfriend Carolyn.  We went for a walk to enjoy the afternoon sunshine and got a bus to go to the heart of downtown Vancouver.  We couldn't wait to get off the bus and walk about.  Of course there are stores all around so we went to Payless Shoes on Granville Street to see how to use Carolyn's 20% off coupon.  She found a couple pairs of shoes for her family and got a good deal.  Then we walked down Robson Street to the large Sephora store.  I keep forgetting about that one.  It is huge.  I browsed and was in awe at how much selection the store had.  Carolyn, the beauty expert, found what she was looking for.  Then we continued on our adventure for a place to eat.

Our plan was to go to AllStar Wings and Ribs and from the outside the stars and stripes were there, but we could also see that it was dark and empty.  There was no need to go any further.  That restaurant was closed.

We were thinking of Red Robin, but I didn't have any coupons so then we decided to continue walking to the Convention Center.  There we landed at Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar Convention Center.  It was great because after all that walking we were ready for a drink and dinner.  Unfortunately we missed Happy Hour, but we didn't miss the drink special which was Bellinis for $5.49.

Rogue Ktichen and Wetbar Bellinis

For dinner we decided to share the fries x 3 (who can resist poutine, bacon and gorgonzola, and truffle oil with parmesan) and the Tempesta pizza with chili prawns.  What a winning combination!  I was impressed that Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar was able to split our bill to share the food and my portion with 1 bellini and dinner came out to $25 (including 15% tip) so I'm going to be taking note of this and going out with Vancity Girlfriend Carolyn more often!  It was a great night catching up!

Sunday Funday - Robson Square Ice Skating

Even though the snow has melted in Vancouver except on the mountains and the rain has started, there are still winter activities that you can do.  Robson Square Ice Skating is one of them.  It is conveniently located downtown on Robson Street underneath the Vancouver Art Gallery.

It is a small rink but it gives people a break from shopping.  They have skate rentals for $4 but remember to bring cash.  I helped chaperone my niece's 14 year old birthday party and took the girls there to skate around.  We didn't stay and went across the street to Cafe Artigiano for a Spanish coffee.  Okay, I wasn't really a chaperone since 14 years old kind of have a mind of their own.  I was there to be a human GPS and keep my sister company.

Skating Robson Square take about an hour or less before it can be a bit too repetitive but it is unique and fun event if you are downtown.  Plus the girls had fun taking selfies and doing their own photo shoots likely to post to each other on Snapchat.  (That's my best guess!).

After skating we walked down to Cartem's Donuts.

Robson Square Ice Skating is open until February 14th (Valentine's Day) from 9am - 9pm Sunday - Thursday and 9am - 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

Vancouver Restaurant: Medina Cafe

The best part about having visitors and family come visit, is being able to explore the city and spend time trying new places.  When my "sister" from London came for the new year, I took a day off work so I could spend time with her.  She wanted to go downtown Vancouver and suggested we try Medina Cafe.

I vaguely had heard of the name of the restaurant in passing but not much else.  Perhaps it was one of those brunch restaurants that would normally have a line up out the door.  Luckily for us since everyone was back to work, our wait was not very long, maybe 20 minutes instead of an hour.  That is the trick for those restaurants who do not take reservations and have a first come first serve policy.  Just go to them on your day off!

The Medina Cafe Menu had such unique items with a Mediterrean or Middle Eastern flair.  It was a difficult decision as to what to try.  Everything on the menu looked tasty and I would definitely return.  I ended up going for the Harissa Burger with two fried eggs on top of a pita with beef, hummous, baba ganoush.  It was a gourmet breakfast and soo super flavorful!

If you come to Vancouver and are staying downtown and want a unique brunch, check out Medina Cafe.  If you are in a rush, they also have waffles to order on the go.  #Yummy

Vancouver Restaurant: Gotham Steakhouse and Bar

Gotham Steakhouse is one of Vancouver's well known restaurants for steak.  They have won several awards and none of this would have enticed me to go.  Instead I could just wonder....until this Christmas.

The office decided to host the Christmas party at Gotham Steakhouse and Bar.  What a treat!  There are private rooms downstairs for company parties and a bar and servers.  It's the full service deal.  It was cozy to have this private Christmas party and even better that there was an open bar!  It's the company Christmas party when I can choose a signature cocktail to enjoy all night long.  I've learned my lesson not to mix drinks or play and drinking games.  I've grown into enjoying a cocktail and Gotham is the place for cocktails.

I researched Gotham cocktail list so I would be prepared for the party.  I waited for others to order so I could admire the different types of drinks and then I ordered the "French 49" martini.  Such a beautiful drink!

The servers are friendly that it wasn't until my 2nd order of this fancy martini cocktail that they corrected me and said it was a "French" martini.  I loved every sip of this drink.

When the food arrived it was just as impressive, the steak was flavorful and tender.  There was a set menu for us and we had options for our appetizer, entree, and dessert.  I choose a prawn cocktail as an appetizer.  It was served on ice and the prawns were large and delicious.

The main course was a filet mignon tenderloin steak.  It was the perfect size and packed with flavour.  The side dishes of mashed potatoes, button mushrooms, and asparagus were in the middle of the table for all to share.  The mashed potatoes were light and fluffy and whipped with butter.  I couldn't get enough and had to finish all of the little plates of mushrooms and asparagus.  This was such an elegant tast of a steak.  I now know why Gotham Steakhouse is so well known for its steak.

I have to admit that this was one of the most memorable Christmas parties!  I'd recommend others to look into Gotham Steakhouse next year for their holiday party but keep in mind that you have to book early.

Thrifty Tuesday: Viet Sub on Robson Street

Downtown Vancouver have lots of restaurants that are almost like a food truck but instead of eating standing on the street you can eat at the bar stools at the window.  Viet Sub is a Vietnamese "restaurant", there is bar stool seating but not much else.  Don't let the decor stop you.

It has a simple menu with salad rolls, spring rolls, Vietnamese subs, and a few other Vietnamese dishes.  But as their name suggests, it is famous for Vietnamese Subs.  I tried a "Special" sub and it was delicious!  The french bread was fresh and soft and the sauce soaked the meat and vegetables.  Yummy!

Viet Sub is at 520 Robson Street and Yelp has given it 4 stars out of 5.  As this is Thrifty Tuesday, I've saved the best for last.  This Viet Special Sub pictured above was less than $5.  Just talking about it is making my mouth water.  Ahh, so happy for friends who know where to eat for cheap!

Vancouver Restaurant: The Buffet at the River Rock Casino Resort

National Blog Posting Month

#NaBloPoMo Day 28 - The Buffet at the River Rock Casino

When we first planned the River Rock Casino Resort staycation, i did not have The Buffet on my list even though I had a casino card which means a small discount.  Instead I was thinking of fancy dinners at restaurants and it was Carolyn who said "I want to go eat at the buffet one night."  Of course I wasn't going to stop that idea because I do love all you can eat buffets.

The best part was our timing for eating at The Buffet on a Saturday night.  We shopped at Richmond Centre all afternoon to work up an appetite.  I specifically starved myself knowing that the Surf and Turf at the Buffet was coming up!  Surf and Turf of sea and land and that is definitely what the Buffet had.  We returned to the hotel at 4:30pm, dropped off our packages and then went downstairs to the Buffet even though it didn't open until 5pm.

Boy that was the best decision ever.  There was already a line up and large groups ahead of us.  We made it through the line and were brought into the dining area.  The Surf and Turf weekend buffet had such an assortment of food.  Now the maximum dining time is 90 minutes and believe me, you'll need it.  By the way when we were all done and left the Buffet the line up was even longer and along the hallway so who knows how long those folks had to wait.

There was the Turf part with prime rib, turkey, chicken with roasted potatoes (I wouldn't dare try the mashed), gravy, toppings, and perogies.  There was an unexciting salad bar.  The Surf part had prawns withe seafood sauce, and the big ticket item were the crab legs!  They had a table filled with sushi rolls and sashimi and another area with hot items such as rice, vegetables, asian noodles.  If you prefer dessert, there was an entire dessert table and a freezer full of ice cream.  So many options, it was hard to choose and eat it all.

Feel free to check out their prices at The Buffet at the River Rock website here:  http://www.riverrock.com/dining/buffet/

Throwback Thursday - Staycation at River Rock Casino Resort

National Blog Posting Month
Blogging Almost Everyday in November
#NaBloPoMo Day 24 - River Rock Casino Resort

I had a bit of a hiatus from #NaBloPoMo and it has been difficult to get back in the groove.  The good news is that the reason for my blogger's block is because of a wonderful staycation and girl's getaway at the River Rock Casino Resort.

First before you make your reservation you want to join iPrefer hotel rewards for free and then you are eligible for the freebies based on availability which include early check in/late check out, room upgrades, and a free appetizer.  It is not automatic so when you check in you still have to ask.

We stayed in a suite with a bedroom, living room, desk and chair and a large bathroom with a shower and bathtub.  My favorite was the chaise lounger by the window.  Of course what it did not have was two queen beds and I am no longer on hotel reservation duty.  Next year it will be someone else because I was swept away having a free upgrade and living in a suite that I didn't even think about the comfort of sleeping in a bed.  Of course I offered to sleep on the hide-a-bed but after a few drinks and being tipsy, everyone is invincible and plans change until the next morning.

It was a relaxing staycation and if I ever needed a break and had girlfriends who needed one too, I'd grab a few and totally return to the River Rock Casino Resort.

Vancouver Park - Vancouver River District

Walking and exploring new parks in Vancouver is a beautiful way to enjoy new scenery and spend time with friends.  The River District is in South Vancouver and along the Fraser River.  It is quiet and peaceful and lovely to stroll through.  There was a pier that we walked along so I could take these scenic photos below.  I love being a tourist in my own town in Vancouver and seeing what the Vancouver Parks have to offer including bird watching.  Take a look to see what the River District has to offer.

Vancouver Park - Everett Crowley Park

In the summer, it is nice to go out for an evening stroll in the park after dinner especially since it is cooler in the evenings and it stays light longer so it's nice to take advantage of that before the dark winters.

Vancouver has a lot of different parks and there is a hidden gem called Everett Crowley Park.  It is like having a forest and the feeling of being in a small town in this park.  There is a lake where you can call the ducks if you have the right quacking sound, then suddenly ducks and baby ducks will start to appear.  They will come up close if you have bird seed.  Otherwise you can admire them from afar.

In the same lake I saw a Blue Heron just standing still enjoying the peace.  The scenery of the lake and the reflection of the trees is beautiful.  That is what nature is all about, taking a step back from the bustle of the city and being able to relax and breathe even if it is just for a minute.

As you walk along the trails, you will find forest flower gardens, nice open green spaces, and even a bee hive.

Even though it is a short walk, it is beautiful and quite serene.

Find out more about the Everett Crowley walking trails at the Vancouver Parks website here:  http://vancouver.ca/parks-recreation-culture/everett-crowley-trails.aspx

Vancouver Foodie Event: Tasting Plates Fraserhood

We are so excited because on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 we are going to Tasting Plates Fraserhood.  It has been so long since I last attended a Tasting Plate adventure.  You can read about my tasting journey from last year with Tasting Plates New Westminister, and Tasting Plates Cambie Village.

So what is Tasting Plates?  It is a foodie adventure.  There are usually six different types of restaurants, bakeries, and this case even a juicery that joins the adventure.  First is the registration where you pick up the tasting plates card that you bring to each restaurant.  The restaurant will have essentially a "tasting plate" for you so you can try different food from six different places.

I was pretty excited with Fraserhood because of some of the familiar places that will be in the adventure such as Commodity Juice, and Straight Outta Brooklyn Pizzeria.  The full details of who is included is here:  Tasting Plates Fraserhood.

Now when I buy the early bird tickets for Tasting Plates each adventure is about $32 which is a real steal for being able to try different drinks, food, dessert and have a walking adventure in a new neighbourhood while you are at it.

Follow Vancity Girlfriends on Twitter as we sample away and see the pictures.  Afterwards I'll blog so come back to see the foodie photos.  Then you can decide if you want to do Tasting Plates Westend which is the next food adventure that has been announced by Tasting Plates.  These are tons of fun and I'm so happy I get to go on Tasting Plates Fraserhood with my Vancity Girlfriend!

Vancouver Afternoon Tea - Fairmont Vancouver Airport Spring Afternoon Tea

Dear Vancity Girlfriends,

Springtime Afternoon Tea
Spring is here and I even though there was no special occasion, I asked my girlfriends if they wanted to go for afternoon like the Queen.  Ironically I had no idea that it was the same time as the Queen's 90th birthday.  So it was an ideal time to celebrate by enjoying the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Afternoon Tea.

There is a Groupon for Spring Afternoon Tea with Sparkling Wine at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport.  This was a 2 for 1 coupon for afternoon tea with 2 hours of free parking.  We couldn't resist the sparkling wine even though I didn't end up finishing it as I had an empty stomach and am not used to drinking on a Sunday afternoon.  My girlfriends luckily did not have any trouble enjoying the sparkling wine that came with our afternoon tea.  The Fairmont Vancouver Airport does not disappoint.  It has amazing views of the airplanes and is luxurious inside.  It is a step into a fairy tale and the service is quite amazing.  I was impressed.

Girls Night Out - Vancouver Art Gallery and Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar

Hi Vancity Girlfriends,

During these hot summer days, it's hard to get motivated to do anything but sit around and try to cool down.  Well, I decided that enough was enough.  It was time for a girl's night out.  So Carolyn and I decided to get together for a girl's night out at the Vancouver Art Gallery.  The Vancouver Art Gallery is by donation on Tuesday nights from 5-9pm so it's a great way to get cultured no matter what your budget is.  Along our adventure, we also found out that it is a wonderful cool space that is air conditioned in every room.

The current exhibitions are "Of Heaven and Earth 100 Years of Italian Painting", this exhibit is on the main floor which usually hosts the traditional paintings.  On the upper floors are the more modern exhibits which included Material Future, How Do I Fit a Ghost in My Mouth, and Wallpapers and Emily Carr.  There were a lot of material art such as a book that was pulled apart and the pictures were cup up and displayed.  It was amazing to see the intricate detail and appearances.  The digital wallpaper was a sight with the digital wallpaper enlarged in scale and changing with the display.  We are not artists so we did not sit and ponder the artwork, instead we gazed, took photos, and admired the work of others.  I'm happy we went and we even made a Vancouver Art Gallery YouTube Video on the occasion.

After our cultured adventure, we roamed the streets of downtown Vancouver wondering where we should eat.  We decided on Gastown and stopped when we saw Rogue Kitchen and Wetbar and we could not resist the cocktail that got us started with Vancity Girlfriends.  That's the fishbowl Sangaria.  Sangaria is like the summer time cool down drink.  I had the 1/2 turkey sandwich with clam chowder and caesar salad while Carolyn had the 2 fish tacos with fries and casesar salad.  We ate, drank and were merry on our Girls Night Out.

Vancouver Event: Tasting Plates Cambie Village

Hello Vancity Girlfriends,

I had so much fun with Tasting Plates New Westminister that I have returned to a new neighbourhood to explore what restaurants Cambie Village has to offer.  Tasting Plates are a great way to spend time with girlfriends who you want to catch up with.  I asked several friends to eventually find one who was excited to attend Tasting Plates Cambie Village with me.  There's something about walking around and trying different foods and drinks at different places.  I forgot to skip lunch which is what I really needed to do for Cambie Village.

We picked up our tickets at U & I Thai and even though it was the first stop, it was packed.  So we grabbed our tickets and walked across the street to Las Tortas.  We started our culinary adventure with a Tamataco - slow roasted pulled pork filled Tamal, chipotle salsa, topped with cactus pico salad in a soft corn shell.  What a great starter!  A cross between a tamale and a taco.  It was served with a Horchata - sweet cinnamon vanilla, milk and rice drink.  The cinnamon made it taste kinda like a chai which I love so it was a nice surprise for me.  My friend didn't like the Horchata so I drank two cups, lucky me!

After that we took walk down Cambie Street to Broadway to find Edge Cafe and Catering.  Here's an elegant coffee shop that does catering.  This tasting plate was a full meal deal.  We started with a cherry tomato stix, then had a trio of seafood chowder, butter chicken, and mini gourmet pesto chicken salad with a cookie for dessert.

Now Solly's Bagelry was down the street and I expected a box of goodies, instead we were greeted with a platter of sweet and savory treats for each of us!  WOW!  On our platter it had sweet and savory treats such as cheese danish, rugoleh, cinnamon bun, chocolate babka, potato knish, lavash, mini bagel with sockeye cream cheese.  Luckily there were take out boxes for us to take home.

After all of that food, the walk back up Cambie street was much needed to help us digest before we could go to the next stop.  We were back at U & I Thai where we had picked up the tickets and had a sit down meal of U and I Thai fish taco with Rice Noodle with green curry with chicken.  They also had Thai dancers who performed for us.  Entertainment and dinner.  Did I really have room for all of this food?

The evening wasn't over yet.  We still had to go to Pronto which is a cool looking diner style restaurant which severed us meatball wtih pomodoro sauce, gorgonzola, walmut pesto crostini, and baked polenta with wild mushroom ragu.  I loved the decor in Pronto which was a nice talking point in itself.  I really was stuffed at this point and wished I had been as smart as others who got their curry from U & I Thai to go.

For dessert we were off to Rain and Shine Ice Cream where we had the blueberry balsamic and non dairy vegan option of coconut chocolate chunk and vegan chocolate sauce.  I was really surprised with the flavour of the vegan option.  I actually preferred it.

All I can say about Cambie Village Tasting Plates is that it was a LOT of food!  It was a fabulous time to catch up with a friend, walk around, and try new restaurants.  I love having food to take home and learned something new.  If there is a lot of food, get MORE of it to take home.  I think there are folks who just don't go to all of the stops but I love exploring all of the places as that's the fun part of Tasting Plates.

I'll be back again on July 8th for Tasting Plates Olympic Village.
It's true.  I'm addicted to Tasting Plates YVR.
See you next time!

Girls NIght Out - Salida 7 Gastown

I love my coupons!  Sometimes I love them too much that I forget their expiry dates.  One was coming up soon in April so I booked my girlfriends for a Girls Night out at Salida 7 Spanish Tapas restaurant in Gastown.

Another bonus is that Salida 7 Spanish restaurant is also in the Vancouver Foodster Meatball Challenge.  Doesn't venison and wild boar meatballs sound like something you would want to try because you are never going to make that at home?  That's what I thought.  What a perfect opportunity that I could use my coupon and in addition to participating in the meatball challenge.   Unfortunately, it was not meant to be.  When we tried to order the meatballs, they did not have any left.  I was quite sad about this so it was lucky that my coupon included wine to make me quickly forget about my disappointment.

My Social Shopper coupon included 4 glasses of taster wines (2 white, 2 red), 2 tapas, and a paella.  Since there were three of us we ordered a third tapas and dessert.  I love girls night because we splurge on dessert to share.  The dessert at Salida 7 is definitely worth saving room for.  Let's take a look at the food photos from the girls night out.

Patatas Brava - Potatoes with lemon aiolli and spicy tomato

Prawn Toast

Wild mushroom and arugula flatbread - refreshing and delicious!
My favourite tapas

Paella - Chicken, sausage, mussels, prawns, saffron and rice all in its own paella pan

Don't forget dessert - creme brulee and the almond pastry puff!
I love the pastry puff with fruit and mint - wonderful combination that melts in your mouth.
So happy we ordered dessert!

I don't play baseball and I'm not good at it, but this time with my choice in restaurants, I hit a home run!  My girlfriends went from scared, not sure what they are doing on Alexander Street in Gastown to relieved and refreshed with Spanish tapas, dessert, and wine.

If this blog post has peaked your interest you can find out more at the Salida 7 website:  http://www.salida7.ca/

Come back in May to see Via Terre Pizzeria as our night Girls Night Out!
They also have meatballs so I'll be ordering those for sure!

Vancouver Restaurant: Secret Location

Dear Vancity Girlfriends,

Now when my girlfriend first asked me to get ready for brunch and we'll go to a Secret Location, I was a bit excited but also scared.  How was I supposed to get there if she wasn't going to tell me the address.  So I asked "Are you going to pick me up?"  At that time she replied "I'll let you know the night before."  How curious, this was going to be.  But a part of me was scared of the unknown.  If she doesn't tell me until the night before, will that give me enough time to figure out the directions and how to transit there.  I sneakily asked my other girlfriend who was joining us to see if she got more information than me.
"Do you know the Secret Location?"  I asked.
"Google it," she answered.  Will google give me the answer?  How odd is that.  So I did what she said and put Secret Location in Google.

Try it!  Google Maps Secret Location.

My "AHA" moment arrived.  ROFL (Rolling on the floor laughing).  Secret Location was the name of the restaurant in Gastown in Vancouver, BC.  So there is no detective adventure, it was plainly told and I interpreted it as a mystery.  How life goes.

So we all went and met at the Secret Location for lunch one afternoon.  It was a rainy day so when I arrived my rain jacket definitely did not match the decor.  Walking into the Secret Location, is like walking into a fancy hotel that has been untouched or a fancier version of an IKEA showroom.  I'm not sure which.  My complimentary bright orange Metropolis umbrella seemed out of place so I shoved that in the umbrella jar at the entrance.  The restaurant was pristine and classic.  We were seated on a comfy couch by the window with large drapery curtains and a sparkling chandelier behind us.  The hostess even offered to put our jackets coat check which I heartily agreed to because my wet jacket seemed a bit out of place in the Secret Location.  The service was excellent as they immediately offered us sparkling or still water.  I also ordered a Vanilla Earl Grey Misto to warm me up from the rainy weather and that was a brilliant choice.  It was amazingly delicious.  For lunch two of us had the Sirloin burger and one had the Cubano sandwich.  Unfortunately for my friend the egg and wild mushroom dish was already sold out.  Their daily soup which was lobster and corn soup that day tempted me at $8 each but that was a small plate and I wanted a big one to fill me up for lunch.  The juicy sirloin burger did the job.  I can see why people would go to the Secret Location to catch up with friends over coffee or tea.  The decor is beautiful and elegant.  Time can stop even for a moment over lunch in the Secret Location and then once it's over, it's time to put on your jacket and step back out in the rain.
